1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
With my music I had to decide on a genre of music that most people would like, but at the same time I wanted to create a music video that was out of the ordinary. From my survey I conducted about music videos and genre of music videos. I decided to create an alternative music video as there is a vast range of different styles of alternative such as indie pop, indie rock, synth, electric and folk. So by choosing an alternative genre, it means that most people would like it as it might appeal to them. In the end we picked an indie pop song.
The reason we went with an alternative indie pop music video is because when looking at other students music videos, they were all mainstream with no niche songs. I feel that the problem with this is is that if you pick a well known song, people will have already seen the music video so when they come to see theirs, they will be expecting something similar but as I picked a song that most people haven’t heard of, people won’t be knowing what to expect.
We came to the conclusion to pick the song, ‘This Too Shall Pass’ by OKGO. We also thought of a concept for our music video which was someone’s morning routine but with a twist. We chose this narrative for our music video as it linked to the lyrics of the song we had picked. The genre of alternative normally has disjuncture throughout their music videos but we wanted a narrative that fitted to the lyrics of our song. The original plan was to have one person within our music video singing the lyrics throughout the song whilst he gets ready for work. This would have been a mixture of both performance and narrative which would have been very interesting. Instead we added two more band members to the morning routine to add more excitement to our music video as then there was more to look at. Our music video challenges forms of other music video as our narrative links to the song but also uses forms of real media techniques as our music video has some parts of disjuncture in it.
The costumes within our music video were out of the ordinary as you would expect someone in a normal music video to be wearing normal clothes but instead, our costumes were based around dressing gowns and suits as it linked to our song. We had all three band members wearing very similar clothing to that they could all match, I also had the main singer not wearing sunglasses and the other two band members wearing sunglasses so you could easily distinguish them apart.
With my digipak poster, it challenges forms of real media products as I have made my advert a double page spread rather than and A4 portrait page for a magazine. Normally adverts for albums are A4 but I wanted my poster advert to be different and to be seen so I made it a double page spread as it then takes up more room. My actual digipak also used and challenged real media products as my main cover for the CD has been hand drawn which is rare in CD covers but has been inspired by Damien Rice. Also my front image is not the same as my digipak poster which challenges real media products as the majority of artists use the same picture for their front cover as they do for their Digipak poster but since my genre is alternative, I wanted to be a bit different and go against the flow.
