1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

With my music I had to decide on a genre of music that most people would like, but at the same time I wanted to create a music video that was out of the ordinary. From my survey I conducted about music videos and genre of music videos. I decided to create an alternative music video as there is a vast range of different styles of alternative such as indie pop, indie rock, synth, electric and folk. So by choosing an alternative genre, it means that most people would like it as it might appeal to them. In the end we picked an indie pop song. The reason we went with an alternative indie pop music video is because when looking at other students music videos, they were all mainstream with no niche songs. I feel that the problem with this is is that if you pick a well known song, people will have already seen the music video so when they come to see theirs, they will be expecting something similar but as I picked a song that most people haven’t heard of, people won’t be knowing what to expect. We came to the conclusion to pick the song, ‘This Too Shall Pass’ by OKGO. We also thought of a concept for our music video which was someone’s morning routine but with a twist. We chose this narrative for our music video as it linked to the lyrics of the song we had picked. The genre of alternative normally has disjuncture throughout their music videos but we wanted a narrative that fitted to the lyrics of our song. The original plan was to have one person within our music video singing the lyrics throughout the song whilst he gets ready for work. This would have been a mixture of both performance and narrative which would have been very interesting. Instead we added two more band members to the morning routine to add more excitement to our music video as then there was more to look at. Our music video challenges forms of other music video as our narrative links to the song but also uses forms of real media techniques as our music video has some parts of disjuncture in it. The costumes within our music video were out of the ordinary as you would expect someone in a normal music video to be wearing normal clothes but instead, our costumes were based around dressing gowns and suits as it linked to our song. We had all three band members wearing very similar clothing to that they could all match, I also had the main singer not wearing sunglasses and the other two band members wearing sunglasses so you could easily distinguish them apart. With my digipak poster, it challenges forms of real media products as I have made my advert a double page spread rather than and A4 portrait page for a magazine. Normally adverts for albums are A4 but I wanted my poster advert to be different and to be seen so I made it a double page spread as it then takes up more room. My actual digipak also used and challenged real media products as my main cover for the CD has been hand drawn which is rare in CD covers but has been inspired by Damien Rice. Also my front image is not the same as my digipak poster which challenges real media products as the majority of artists use the same picture for their front cover as they do for their Digipak poster but since my genre is alternative, I wanted to be a bit different and go against the flow.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

I feel that both my main product and both of my ancillary tasks are very effective in many ways such as the way they present the music genre I have chosen to base my products around, how I made them eye caching and what would either make people want to buy or watch my products. My main product, my music video has been edited in a way to make it a dream come to reality along with my ancillary tasks of my digipak poster and my digipak itself to portray a very relaxed environment which has successfully been done. Main product (Music Video) In my opinion, my music video is probably the most effective way of presenting my coursework and the ideal way to portray my music genre, alternative pop, as the narrative and performance is very unique and has never been done before. Music videos in the alternative genre tend to be very unique and artistic sometimes trying to convey a message through the video as we have tried to achieve in our music video by basing our narrative on our main singer’s morning routine. For most people getting up in the morning is very hard, but in our music video we show that getting up in the morning is effortless. We chose our narrative about a morning routine as the lyrics of the song by OKGO say, ‘When the morning comes.’ This made sense to base our narrative around the morning as it links with the lyrics of the song. Our music video is also effective as it is filled with loads of quick editing cuts and interesting camera angles which will keep the viewer entertained which means that they will not get bored of the video easily. The music video links excellently with my digipak and digipak poster as I have used props and costumes that are typically seen and used during the morning. Ancillary Tasks (Digipak and Digipak poster) My digipak and digipak poster are also very effective as the images displayed on the digipak and the poster have a strong link to the music video which shows that both of the products are very fitting to my main product, my music video. I have used images such as toast and a cup of tea within my digipak which shows the link of the morning which my music video has. This shows that both of my products are very effective with and without my main product. I have also used clever camera tricks within my digipak as I have a photo of a cup of tea from a bird’s eye view and have used this image as the outline for my CD holder. My digipak poster is made to be a double page spread for a magazine which I feel is very effective as it is a lot more noticeable than having a one page poster trying to sell your digipak as when the reader opens up the magazine to the poster advert, they are faced with one big thing rather than having a one page poster advert because their eye could be drawn to whatever is on the other page. Conclusion Overall, I feel that individually and combined my digipak, poster advert and music video are very effective in the way of presenting my musical genre and also attracting the consumers attention. All three of my products have strong connections and links to each other to show that they belong to together. My 3 products are very unique and subtle but at the same time, they are eye catching to the consumer and reader.

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

With my audience feedback, I published a survey onto survey monkey to help me find out what peoples responses were towards my music video were. This is the survey I posted on the website:
I asked a couple of questions that people could answer themselves rather than being tied down by an all multiple choice survey, I feel that this allowed the audience and people answering the survey to really express how they felt about the music video rather than having to pick a one word answer for each question.
The responses on my blog have helped me on how to improve my music video for example a thing within the music video that has had problems is continuity as sometimes the lead singer is singing ahead of the song and for the rest of the song he is perfectly in time. lighting issue was also a problem within my music video as we had to film at a different time to when the other days were filmed. Overall people liked the music video and would watch another one if another was made in a similar style.
