Storyboarding for concept of music video
The pictures are the drafting of the story board for our music video, this is a guide and a reference to help us when it comes to film our music video so we know what scene comes when and what camera angles to use during specific scenes. we also kept track of what scene came when during what part of the song by giving each scene a time period so we know how long each scene should last for.

Information on Song Artist-OKGO
Info on Artist: The band Ok Go was formed in 1998 by the lead singer, Damian Kulash and bassist Tim Nordwind. The band's speciality is alternative rock, although they also perform power pop from time to time. The alternative rock song which we're doing, "This Too Shall Pass", was released in January 2010. It involves two music videos - the first, the 'Marching Band' video, was not the album version of the song and the 'Rube Goldberg Machine' video, which was considered to be the original version. We feel the uniqueness of these videos really matches their respective songs. The first consists of making music out of simple, everyday objects, which are placed in a certain order and calculated precisely so that the movement of one object will have an impact on the movement of another. This is what makes this a production line of sounds, which match those of the instruments the band use for the actual song. The second, however, does the same thing, although it replaces objects with people, who are required to play their respective instruments at the right time. What really caught our attention apart from the originality of the group was the fact that both of the videos from "This Too Shall Pass" have absolutely no cuts. This demonstrates that the group are very dedicated and must have had loads of practise to get everything right and on time in a single, long shot.
Music Videos in Similar Genres
"The Middle" - Jimmy Eat World: This music video was shot by Paul Fedor and has all the theme of a teenage party. The style in which it was shot is a fast paced one. It has mostly mid-close ups and mid shots, which focus on the near nudity of the teenage actors, who don't seem to wear anything except their underwear. This, however, does not include the main actor and the band. The location for the music video was decided to be a house, at which the party is seen taking place, as well as its surroundings (the front and the back garden swimming pool). However, it is mostly shot indoors. The video choice is unusual, as I don't believe I know many music video directors who would use near-nudity to represent teenage sexuality, although this would be a more blunt way of doing so. This is also used to separate the main actor from the rest of the crowd (except the band), as he unsuccessfully tries to fit in and therefore has a secondary theme - relationships. This is supported by the ending, when he finds a girl in a similar situation. The unusual form of 'make-up' is the scene at 00:48, when we see the teens with marker pen left on their bodies, which could support the theme of a teen party, through the use of the stereotype of teenagers. This is a video which includes a 50/50 mix of narrative and performance.
"Numb" - Linkin Park: This music video was directed by Joe Hahn and includes decreased saturation and a rather depressed mood. The speed of editing roughly matches that of the song, especially when the song reaches a climax. The angles that the camera uses often include wide shots, mid-close ups and the occasional close up shot. The whole video was shot in the Czech capital, Prague, mainly at the St Vitus Cathedral. We receive wide shots of the city and occasionally get a glimpse of the actress on its famed Charles Bridge. All its indoor scenes were shot at Johannes Kepler Grammar School. It involves a usual teenage fashion. However, this excludes the actress, who wears clothing that almost resembles a gothic style. This could be a link to the theme of the song, as its all black which nearly matches her hair. The only difference is the band itself. Whilst playing, we notice that they are dressed with clothes which match her own, further creating a link to the depressed mood. The music video is mainly narrative based, although with a small mix of performance.
"Bring Me To Life" - Evanescence: Philipp Stölzl's music video includes a lot of CGI and animation, especially for the entire city we see in the establishing shot. Its theme is very dark, as evidenced at the start. We see that most, if not all, of the shots are shot with a mix of mid close ups and mid shots. Even though the entire city is made with CGI, the shots of the actual mix were done in January 2003 in Romania. The main actress (and unlike the other videos, the main band singer Amy Lee) is seen throughout the video in a nightgown, whilst the rest of the band is featured in gothic clothing. What is an exception are the party-goers upstairs, who are dressed in regular party clothing and masks. Whilst one of the girls takes of her mask, we see her make-up ruined, suggesting a broken heart and effectively adding to the song's main theme. To add to the goth style, we see Lee with heavy eye make-up and piercings. This video is similar to the other two - a mix of performance and narrative, although it would be more associated with "The Middle', by Jimmy Eat World.
These are the music videos I chose to compare to "This Too Shall Pass". They are considered to be alternative rock videos, or close at least and therefore help us in comparing all three to our chosen music video and what we would do for our own. I had a bit of trouble finding the right videos because of their respective natures - although they do have the alternative side to them, I noticed that none of them are COMPLETELY alternative and therefore couldn't decide whether to simply do the rock category, pure and simple. However, I didn't think this would then have any sort of link to This Too Shall Pass, because of the simplistic and rather light hearted nature of it, not people yelling into the microphone and slamming their guitar down on the stage floor, or so the stereotypical rock style goes. Therefore, even though that This Too Shall Pass was entirely performance based, I decided to do my previous idea of these videos because they are all unique in some way that TTSP also is.

Digipak Planning (Layout)
Digipak Layout from forbez44
This task has been completed to show my rough layout of where everything will go when I come to create my digipak. It will show where I am putting key text and photos and where it will be displayed on the digipak. The poster to advertise my digipak is also at the end of the slideshare which also shows where I plan to put my photos, text and logo. By completing this task, it gives me a rough outline and idea of placement of everything on my poster and digipak so when it comes to create my digipak, I can look back at my original idea and place my images, logo and text in a similar place.

Task 22- Branding
This is my final design for my logo for my band that will be performing in my music video. I used Photoshop in order to create this logo and I also used some images from google images in order to help me with my logo and also to make it look better and more professional. The font I used was downloaded from DaFont.com and used a font called 'Indie Sellout.' I used the Photoshop tool such as the paint brush tool and rubber to make smaller details finer.
On Google images, I found two different pictures of birds that I quite liked (shown above) so I put them both into my logo that I made to see which one was more aesthetically pleasing in which I went with the birds on the left.
I found two different mountain ranges that I quite liked and put them both into my logo to see which I like more which I liked the mountains on the right as when I put the mountains on the left into my logo, they didn't really look like mountains very much so I used the ones on the right and got rid of the sun in the background and added my own using the Photoshop tools.
By completing this task, I now have branded my band who is now know known as 'Peaks.' I think this is a clever name as there are mountains which have peaks. I feel that my logo uses very subtle and light colours and isn't too bright for the person looking at my logo. The logo is kept very simple and not at all over complicated but there is also a lot to look at when you look at the logo.

Mood Board For Our Music Video
In This task, I have explored the different costumes and ideas of our music video and have refined it down into a mood board full of ideas that we could consider using for our music video. We have planned out roughly what our music video is about and what it will contain.

Costume and Prop Planning For Our Music Video
By completing this task, I have now explained what costumes that we are using for our music video along with the props that we will be planning on using in our music video. This will also show our original ideas that we had for our music video so it can show the changes we may make when we actually come to film our music video.

Task 15- Lyric Analysis
This task has allowed me to delve into the actual structure of the song and lyrics and especially their meanings. The website Genius.com has allowed me to do just that - this was crucial because, due to the meaning of words, I can now choose the appropriate theme and style of the music video.

Music Video Editing Inspiration
In this music video, I love the way it is edited towards the end where it uses image overlay which inspires me to do something similar to my music video to increase my marks. I also like the editing halfway through the music video where the girl is dancing with the 3D shapes around her and she turns slightly transparent and there are several of her using a chain reaction effect. This editing also uses an overlay technique.

Audience Music Consumption
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7P2WKPL
By completing this task, I have found out that a lot of younger people (aged between 12 and 20) watch pop music videos on Youtube during the evening. Older males within the survey said that they watched Rock and Pop Music videos on Youtube. Everyone that answered the survey said they used Youtube to watch music videos which isn't very surprising as Youtube is the biggest video sharing website on the internet. Not many people selected that they listened to Alt genre or watching music videos in the morning. Most people on the survey selected that they hardly watched music videos as they just listen to music through iTunes or Spotify as it's more of a hassle to watch music videos online.

Music Consumption
By completing this task, I have expressed my opinion on music and music video consumption and if I watch music videos or not. I feel that the majority of people my age with have the same opinion on music videos as me. I also think that they will use the same platform or a similar platform to listen to music on i.e Apple Music or Spotify. Other people may illegally download music because they want to save money and not pay for music. Even though they won't be paying any money for the music, the quality of the songs won't be as good as if you were to buy the track from iTunes or listen to it on Spotify.

LipSync Video Test
By filming and editing the lip-syncing video test, I now have an idea of what it will be like to film my music video and how to use iMovie when it come to edit the clips for my music video. When i come to film my music video, I will be using a DSLR camera which is both better quality and has better handling instead of using an iPhone like I used to shoot the clips for my lip-syncing test video

Task 7 Task 3
Unfinished
From this task, I have learnt how cinematography, editing, and mise en scene is used in different music genres. I have found that chart and pop music tend tone dressed more smart/casually rather than an alternative or rap song. Faster editing is also used in rap videos rather than a slow sounding song.
Task 8 Task 3- Audience Research
By completing this task, I have learnt how other people react to student videos produced by other schools. I now also know what I should put into my music video and what I should't put in my music video when it comes to plan and create my video. From watching other student's music videos, I have found out it is better to have two cameras when filming as you can have multiple angles for the same take. I have also learnt that I need to find someone who is prepared to take part in my music video and will look like they are enjoying it instead of someone in my music video who looks really awkward and doesn't want to take part.
Task 7 Part 4- Music Video Analysis
Now that I have completed this task, I now know how to apply the different media Theories to a music video, for example Andrew Goodwin's theory of disjuncture and how to use the gratification model in a music video I now know how to apply it to mine when it comes round to making and constructing my music video to give it the same effect that other music videos have in order to make similar to other music videos as it applies to the different media theories.

Task 7 Part 1- Music Video Analysis
\ By completing this task, I now know how music videos uses mise on scene, editing, sound and cinematography. When I come to make my music video, I will know how to dress the people in my video along with camera angles I will use. Each technique has a different effect on the viewer for example slow motion might show intensity and makes the viewer feel intense.

Task 7 Task 2- Music Video Analysis
By completing this task, I can now identify performance and narrative aspects of the song as well as key bits of mine on scene, cinematography and editing used in these specific music videos. I can also analyse these music videos by using different theories such as the Equilibrium Theory and Todorov's Theory.

Task 9- Music Video Directors
After completing this task, I now have the knowledge of what different music directors produce whether it's rock, pop, rap etc. For example, Francis Lawrence has worked with Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas who are quite pop genre artists meanwhile a music video director such as Ruskin Kyle, produces more underground music and would probably have a lower price budget over someone like Mark Romanek who has directed music videos for Jay-Z and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Task 8 Part 4- Audience Research
By completing this task, I can now see how technology has changed within the consumption of music videos and how people watch videos nowadays via the internet. I can see that consumption of music videos has become very simple and easy for example, purchasing music videos and navigating your way around a website to find a specific music videos.

Task 6- Student Music Video Analysis
From looking at these music videos, I now have a rough idea of what I am capable of when I come to making my music video. I know what kind of editing skills and cinematography skills have been used when the students made their music videos. I have also learnt about what makes a music video weak such as special effects, sloppy editing and slow songs as I have learnt from watching some music videos. The first music video I looked at got a B which I agree with as the rise en scene is really good and well thought about, there is minimal editing or cinematography as the whole music video is one long take which is very impressive but also shows no camera or editing skills and the lip-syncing is all in time. The second music video got a D which I also agree with because mise en scene, cinematograpy and lip-syncing was all very poor, the use of editing was okay as they showed their skills throughout the music video but the whole concept of the music video was very poor. Finally, the last music video I analysed got an A which i agree with as this video looked like a professional music video and was very well done. They shot their music video in a studio which shows they went out of their way to go to a studio to film their video. The rise en scene and editing was very god as they used an editing software they had to pay for, they also showed off various different camera angles which probably had an influence on their mark.

Task 4- Digipak Advert Analysis
This Digipak is dominated by a woman's face promoting The Bombay Bicycle Club's album. The photograph of the woman is a close up of her face to the right of the page leaving space for text on the left hand side of the page telling us when the album is out. The font used in this digipak advert is very simple and easy to read. Important text is bold so we can identify crucial information. This advert has been kept very simple telling us all the key information we need to know.
The killers Digipak is kept very plain and simple and have gone for a theme of a mosaic pattern for their advert. Killers have gone for the colour purple as the main colour for their digipak advert and it is very evocative as the purple is quite light and bright and makes the font stand out on the advert. there is not much text at all on the advert and it is kept very simple and tells you the crucial information about their new album. The only problem with this Digipak is it doesn't tell you when their album comes out. By completing this task, I now now how specific artists and bands advertise their Digipaks. They normally advertise their Digipaks very similarly to their album art so when people see the album, they can easily recognise the band as they may have seen the advert previously. Different bands of different genres use different colours, typography and pictures to attract their target audiences for example, Ed Sheeran used one colour, a picture of his face close up and very minimal text in his digipac advert mean whilst Green Day, who is a rock band, used dull colours.

Task 5- Branding Research
By completing this task, I now know how specific bands mainly in the alternative/indie genre, brand their music and their albums. I have found out that this specific genre usually are very simplistic in their branding. They use very simple fonts and logo other bands use more complicated designs in their branding and artwork but it seems that alternative and indie bands use a more simplistic design towards their branding.

Task 3- Digipak Analysis
By completing this task, I now have the knowledge of what a Digipak is, how much one costs, what makes people spend money on a Digipak and what a Digipak is made out of. For instance I now know a digpak is made out of paperboard or cardstock outer binding. I also know that a traditional digipak measures 125.5mm X 139mm on each panel. All of this information that I have now learnt will help me complete the next task.
Thursday, 25 June 2015
Task 3- Digipak Survey Video
By completing this task, I now know what people of different ages know about digipak's and what would make them buy a digipak for example, extra album art and exclusive downloads. I also know the average prices that different people would spend on a digipak and Jewel Case CD's.
Wednesday, 17 June 2015
Task 2- Analysis of Music Websites
By completing this task, can now recognise the layouts of websites for different genres of music without knowing who the band is simply by looking at images, font and colour. For example, a bubbly font may be used on a boybands website mean whilst a decaying font would probably be used on a heavy metal website. Layouts of a website look different and unique to each other, but placement of tabs do not signify a music genre and is all to do with images, font and colours used on the music website. Every band with a different genre will have a different target audience for example, One Direction would not have the same target audience as Slipknot. I now know how to construct a music website and what I need to make it look like to make it appeal to my specific target audience. You can attract your target audience by displaying certain pictures, merchandise etc. in order to make them want to go to your website.

Task 1- The History of Music Videos
By completing this task, I now know what was the first music video and what kind of music genre was being put into music video form. I now also know key dates of specific music videos such as Elvis and Queen. Also I can see a clear change throughout time and how the genre of songs used in music videos and how cinematography and costumes have changed throughout time.
